I have finally realized that if I stash my yarn in clear plastic bins it makes it much easier to locate. I save all of my unused yarns, just in case I need just a ball or two for a project.
I save all of those giant comforter bags, and have also bought some of the large clear zip up bags, and will store a complete project, needles, scissors, tape measure and all so it is easy to just grab and go when I feel the urge.
I often work on a few projects at once, and I always keep a small one in the car with me for unexpected waits - train crossings, waiting for kids to get out of school, traffic accident - I don't mind the wait so much anymore, because I am busy knitting. As I am an avid camper, I always leave at least one project at the campsite, that way I always know that I will have something to do without packing up all the needed supplies from home each weekend.
I have taken all of my loose patterns and put them into clear plastic page protectors and then sorted them into a binder, organized by needle size needed to work the project. When I get a new pattern I will write on the front page with a large felt pen the amount of wool needed to finish as well as if it is Knit or Crochet, and the needle size suggested- makes it so easy to find a pattern to go with that fabulous new wool I just couldn't resist....

Hi Brenda and welcome to the forum,
Excellent suggestions! I also use tubs and I love those plastic zipper bags that curtains and comforters come in.

I use wood shoe cubbies for my yarn. Each slot is large enough to hold several small skeins or one supersized skein. I try to keep only one yarn per slot, so I can see at a glace what I have, but sometimes I have to combine yarns.
Here's a picture of one of my cubbies: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21275412@N02/2069480561/
This particular unit is from Lowes. It's part of a stackable set. Besides the cubby, I have drawers sets and cubbard sets to hold other craft supplies.
I keep my scraps in clear, large ziplock bags, sorted by weight. I have a needlepoint craft stand that stays next to the couch that keeps my needles and current project. Non-current projects are kept in their own ziplock bags, with all the yarn and instructions.
